Rep. Julia Letlow, R-La., praised the Supreme Court on Monday for striking down Louisiana's congressional map, telling Newsmax the decision was a long-overdue rejection of race-based redistricting.

"I'm so proud that the Supreme Court did the right thing and ruled that you can no longer draw districts based solely on race," Letlow said on "Rob Schmitt Tonight."

The Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais vacated a lower-court decision that required Louisiana to maintain a second majority-Black congressional district. The dispute centered on whether the map violated the Voting Rights Act or improperly prioritized race in the redistricting process.

Letlow said the prolonged legal fight created instability for candidates and voters alike.

"I've run for Congress three times now, and every time I've had to run in a different district because it was litigated that way for me," she said. "So, I am so glad that the Supreme Court finally has a ruling on this, so that the state Legislature can do their job and draw fair maps for Louisiana."

Letlow said the redistricting fight had become deeply divisive across the state.

"This has been so divisive for Louisiana, neighbor to neighbor," Letlow said. "I'm so grateful that now we have the confirmation going forward that we're going to draw fair maps that are based on real things that people care about instead of solely based on race."

She added that race-based mapping "was the wrong thing to do for years and years," and said she was "grateful that the Supreme Court finally laid it to rest."

The interview also turned to Louisiana's Republican Senate primary Saturday, where Letlow is challenging Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy.

President Donald Trump has endorsed Letlow in the race, which also includes Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming and businessman Mark Spencer.

"I am so grateful to have the president's encouragement and endorsement to jump into this race," she said. "There's no greater endorsement in the world, and Louisiana knows that."

A Quantus Insights poll released Friday showed Letlow leading at 41.6%, followed by Fleming (29.6%), Cassidy (19.6%), and Spencer (1.7%). About 7.5% of voters were undecided. If no candidate gets a majority of votes, the top two finishers advance to a runoff June 27.

Letlow drew a contrast between herself and Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump at the president's second impeachment trial in 2021.

"They know that they need a senator who will fight for them and work with President Trump, not against him," Letlow said.

She also framed the race as a question of accountability to voters.

"This is not my seat. It's the people's seat," Letlow said. "And every decision I make and every vote that I take, I'll never forget that."
