Alabama’s senators voted to sanction Russia and penalize countries that buy Russian gas, the result of a long campaign championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt was part of a bipartisan effort to pass the legislation, originally sponsored by Graham. She and Sen. Tommy Tuberville voted in favor of its passage Friday.

“While Senator Lindsey Graham may not have been physically on the Senate floor today to witness the passage of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, his presence and legacy were unmistakable,” Britt posted on X after the vote.

Britt said she will work “diligently” to get the legislation through the House and onto President Donald Trump’s desk.

“Today, President Zelenskyy is watching from Ukraine — and Putin is watching from Moscow,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., an original sponsor of the bill, as reported by The Associated Press.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has gone on for four years.

Congress has struggled to continue U.S. funding and weapons to Ukraine, but Trump has indicated support for the package, according to the AP.

Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., who was appointed by the state’s governor to fill her brother’s seat, told the AP she was honored to carry on his work.

“This legislation hits Putin where it hurts,” she said.
