Katie Britt for president? New York Times says senator on not-so-short list to succeed Trump
Alabama U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, hugely popular with the sitting president, is one of a raft of candidates who might be next in line for his job, according to The New York Times.
Britt was one of 62 names of people who might be candidates for the next presidential election in 2028.
“Senator Katie Britt of Alabama is well-liked by Mr. Trump and the party’s donors,“ the Times’ Reid J. Epstein wrote. Britt’s name was listed in the logical subset of possible presidential candidates - eight Republican senators.
That group also includes Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, David McCormick, Rand Paul, Tim Scott, and Rick Scott.
That category is up against a host of other collections of potential candidates, including Democratic senators, present and former vice-presidents, current Trump administration officials, former Biden administration officials, Democratic and Republican governors, House members, the progressives, Trump exiles, “The Politicians Who Could Make a Quick Leap,” media figures (Stephen A. Smith, anyone?) and Trump family members.
“The collection of names is admittedly speculative, and it’s likely to grow,” the Times noted.
As for Britt, Trump has spoken highly of her, while encouraging her to remain loyal to him.
“I hope she always remains loyal to me so I can continue to support her,” Trump said at a White House event on maternal health in March.
Her response was, “You’ve got it.”
He doubled down, though. “I would hate to go against her. That will never happen, Katie, right?” the president asked.
“That’s right, sir,” Britt responded.
Of course, technically, a Britt presidential candidacy in 2028 couldn’t be in opposition to Trump -- that is, if you count the U.S. Constitution prohibiting a third Trump term.
AL.com reached out to Britt’s representatives but did not get a response by posting.
