Rep. Maggie Goodlander talks about Iran, DOJ's attempt to indict her

Calls for congressional oversight are growing as war with Iran intensifies.

Among those voices is Democratic Rep. Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire.

"He hasn't been able to answer the question of how this ends," Goodlander said of President Donald Trump.

The first-term congresswoman has criticized the Trump administration's military action in the Middle East and is pushing back on a $200 billion funding request that is said to be coming soon from the Pentagon.

"This president owes the American people a clear explanation of why this war is in their interest, how much it's going to cost and how this is going to end well for all of us," said Goodlander.

A Navy Reserve veteran herself, Iran is far from the only conflict Goodlander has questions about. The removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Madura by U.S. troops and comments from Trump regarding Cuba are also of concern to her.

"To what end is the question," said Goodlander. "There again, the president has not set out any clear vision of what it is we're trying to achieve."

The Trump administration has said that it is trying to secure the Western Hemisphere from competitors and adversaries like China and Russia.

"That's maybe in general terms," Goodlander said. "This is just an upside-down and totally backwards set of objectives."

Beyond foreign policy issues, Goodlander has also been navigating ripple effects from the "must not obey illegal orders" video, which led the Department of Justice to attempt, unsuccessfully, to indict her and five other Democrats in Congress.

"It motivates me, more than anything, to do my duty and to stand up to this, because I don't want this to be a playbook for all of time in this country," she said.

Meanwhile, Goodlander and others are also looking ahead to November and efforts to reclaim a Democratic majority in the House.

"We've got three imperatives: One is to lower the sky-high cost of living, the second is to save health care," she said. "The third is to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse."

Tune in at 9:30 a.m. Sunday for our extended @Issue Sit Down with Representative Maggie Goodlander. We ask the congresswoman about the ongoing partial government shutdown and Democrat objectives as TSA, Coast Guard and FEMA employees go unpaid.
