Longest-Serving US Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run Crash in Toledo

Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur was taken to hospital after a hit-and-run crash in Toledo on Sunday morning, according to her office and local authorities. Police said the crash happened shortly before 11:00 local time and remains under investigation.
Kaptur, an 80-year-old Democrat who is the longest-serving woman in the US House of Representatives, was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck while she was travelling to church, a spokesperson for her office said.
Authorities described her injuries as non-life-threatening. Another person was also taken to hospital. In a statement, Kaptur's office said: "Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash."
The statement added that she "expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon."
Toledo police said they were in the "early stages" of investigating what they described as a "hit-skip crash". No further details about the vehicle involved or any possible suspect have been released.
The investigation is continuing.
Representing Ohio’s 9th congressional district, Kaptur is the fourth-longest serving member of the House at the moment. First elected in 1982, Kaptur is the first woman to serve as ranking member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development.
Despite serving in Congress for more than two decades and a favorable national climate for her party, Kaptur is one of the more vulnerable House Democrats up for reelection in this year’s midterms. She will face off against Trump-endorsed Republican Derek Merrin, who lost to Kaptur in 2024 by just under 2,400 votes.
