Vandals target Portland auto shop owned by husband of SW Washington Democrat who voted to fund ICE

Correction Appended.

Someone vandalized the Portland auto-shop owned by the husband of U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, splashing graffiti targeting the southwest Washington Democrat.

Dean’s Car Care, 1506 N.E. Lombard St., was damaged sometime on late Friday or early Saturday, according to a Portland Police Bureau spokesperson and an anonymous report issued on an anarchist blog.

The post claimed responsibility for spraypainting “Dean’s Wife Funds ICE” on one side of the building and said antifascists “drenched the storefront in bright orange with paintbombs.”

There was little sign of the vandalism when a photojournalist for The Oregonian/OregonLive visited the premises Tuesday, though it appeared several patches of exterior wall had been freshly painted.

Gluesenkamp Perez made mechanic’s jumpsuits part of her political image when she introduced herself to the voters in Washington’s 3rd District in 2022. The business was founded in December 2012 by her husband, Dean Gluesenkamp.

Gluesenkamp Perez was previously listed as a co-owner of the business, state records show. Her name was removed from filings after Gluesenkamp Perez took office in 2023.

In a statement, Gluesenkamp Perez said political attacks would “never influence” how she represents her district.

“Once again, blue collar Democrats are being treated as the enemy by extremists who think intimidation is politics,” she said. “My hope for these individuals is that they find some peace and fulfillment in life.”

Portland officers declined to specify the nature of the graffiti, citing the ongoing investigation. A voicemail left at the business wasn’t returned.

A splatter of red paint was reported on the front door of Gluesenkamp Perez’s office in Vancouver on Jan. 26, causing about $750 in damage. Vancouver police said at the time they didn’t have a motive or a suspect.

Gluesenkamp Perez was one of only seven House Democrats to vote for a bill last month that featured $10 billion in funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In a statement, Gluesenkamp Perez previously characterized it as a “vote to keep the government open.” She said that the Coast Guard and FEMA, both branches of the Homeland Security department, are important to her district.

That support has made her a target of Democrats’ left flank, but it could be less of a liability in her own purple-hued district, where President Donald Trump remains popular and Gluesenkamp Perez is likely to face her most serious challenge from the right in the upcoming election.

Correction: A previous version of this article misstated the business relationship between U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Dean’s Car Care.
