Virginia Sen. Mark Warner is mourning the death of his 36-year-old daughter following a long illness.

“We are heartbroken beyond words by the passing of our beloved daughter, Madison, 36, after a decades-long battle with type-1 diabetes and other health issues. She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void,” the Democratic lawmaker posted on social media Monday.

Madison was the eldest of three daughters raised by Warner and his wife Lisa Collis.

“We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we navigate this profound loss,” the Senator added.

Warner was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008 following one term as Virginia’s 69th governor. He serves on multiple committees including the Select Committee on Intelligence, where he’s the vice chairman.

Several of Warner’s colleagues in the House of Representatives and the Senate offered their condolences.

Former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who left office in January, crossed party lines to say he and his wife are supporting the Warners in their time of grief.

“Our prayers are with them on this most difficult of all days,” Youngkin wrote.

Warner has been critical of President Trump’s decision to join Israel in its attack on Iran in recent weeks.
