Project Hail Mary Gets Streaming Release Update As Amazon Extends Theatrical Run

Project Hail Mary co-director Christopher Miller just revealed what the sci-fi film's theatrical extension means for its future streaming release.

In a post on X, Miller announced that Project Hail Mary won't be streaming "anytime soon" because "this is a movie that needs to be seen on the big screen." He added that the film will be returning to IMAX screens for one week beginning this weekend.

This update comes amid Amazon MGM Studios' announcement that Project Hail Mary's theatrical window is being extended. As a result, the film won't arrive on Prime Video as early as the studio had originally planned. A streaming release date hasn't been revealed yet. Miller encouraged everyone to bring their friends and family to the theater to watch Project Hail Mary because it's a cinematic "experience to share with others."

"We announced yesterday that MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical window for PROJECT HAIL MARY so it won’t be on streaming anytime soon. This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen - and w a full return to IMAX screens for 1 week only starting this weekend, make plans to see it in a theater now!

"Bring friends and loved ones. It’s an experience to share with others."

The film's two directors, Miller and Phil Lord, are best known for directing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie, and for producing the Spider-Verse movies.

Each movie studio has taken a different approach to its theatrical window in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Some movies are shown exclusively in theaters for 30 days or 45 days, while others might stick around for 90 days or longer before being released on digital and streaming platforms.

Based on this latest update, Amazon MGM Studios appears to be more flexible with its own exclusive theatrical windows, including extended runs for certain movies that perform well at the box office, like Project Hail Mary has.

Recently, the CEO at a different studio, Sony's Tony Rothman, told exhibitors at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas that he wants to see theaters enforce longer windows so that films that deserve to be seen on the big screen have every opportunity to succeed. He also wants theaters to decrease the number of ads that play in theaters and make the moviegoing experience more affordable for families.

Extending the theatrical window for Project Hail Mary is beneficial to both Amazon MGM Studios and the public. The film has proven to be a massive hit over the past month. It debuted at No. 1 on opening weekend and grossed $141 million at the global box office. Ahead of its fifth weekend in theaters, Amazon Studios confirmed that Project Hail Mary has already passed $550 million worldwide so far.

Several records have been broken in recent weeks, including the fact that Project Hail Mary is Amazon MGM Studios' highest-grossing film, and it's the second-highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie taking the top spot at $639 million globally.

Along with its box office success, Project Hail Mary has also been a hit with critics, having earned a Certified Fresh score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name and stars Ryan Gosling as a man who develops amnesia after being in a coma. He discovers that his fellow crew members on board a spacecraft have died, and humanity's last hope rests on his shoulders.
