President Donald Trump did not call on embattled U.S. Rep. Max Miller to resign despite criticism from Sen. Bernie Moreno, Miller's former father-in-law, that Miller was unfit for office.

Miller's ex-wife, Emily Moreno, has accused him of physical abuse amid a divorce and custody dispute over their 2-year-old daughter. Miller has denied the allegations and, on Aug. 2, doubled down on his decision to stay in his congressional race.

Shortly afterward, Bernie Moreno said Miller needed "serious psychological help" and "should not serve in the House of Representatives." Ohio's senior senator said Miller was a danger to his ex-wife, Moreno's daughter.

Trump called the scenario "a very sad thing" that should be resolved by the families involved. "It's accusations, and I'm going to let them figure that out," Trump said during an Aug. 3 news conference.

Before winning the northeastern Ohio congressional seat in 2022, Miller served as Trump's campaign aide. Trump endorsed Miller to challenge Republican Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, who had voted to impeach Trump.

"I know Max. He's a good person. I mean, I always thought he was a very good person," Trump said.

Miller faces competition from Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter in November to hold onto his 7th District seat. The district covers Medina and Ashland counties and parts of Cuyahoga and Wayne counties.
