Rep. Max Miller under investigation by House committee for domestic abuse claims
Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee after he requested that the probe be initiated himself.
The ethics committee wrote in a statement that he "may have engaged in domestic violence and abuse or illegal drug use.” It was unclear whether his request prompted the investigation.
Miller is facing domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife as the two undergo a public custody battle for their 2-year-old child. In a post to X, Miller wrote he had "nothing to hide" and denied the claims.
In light of all the renewed interest in my family affairs I am going to file my own paperwork for an ethics investigation into myself to clear my name from these horrific attacks on myself and family. I have absolutely nothing to hide.
We will be providing the committee all necessary documents needed for a detail examination. The accusations continue to change, but my facts stay the same. I am looking forward to my colleagues reading everything for themselves," Miller's post read.
Miller's ex-wife, Emily Moreno, is the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio. Moreno is defending his daughter and calling on Miller to resign.
This is truly the 7th level of hell. This has been a horrific experience for my entire family," Moreno said of the public allegations.
He said he is unfit for office due to the allegations and that he should not run for reelection. Miller faces a Wednesday deadline to decide whether or not to stay in the reelection race.
Moreno told reporters on Capitol Hill, “I don't care about the politics of this," as he continues to defend his daughter, whom he said is fearful of Miller's potential behavior.
In a livestream over the weekend, Miller denied the allegations. He released several files, including audio recordings and transcripts, in an attempt to prove his innocence.
No court, no agency has ever substantiated any allegation of abuse against me. No criminal charge has ever been filed against me," Miller said.
A lawyer for Miller said that he accidentally released sensitive pictures of the congressman’s daughter in the file dump. One image he released could be considered “child sexual abuse material.”
