Oregon congresswoman says she will push to impeach Homeland Security secretary
U.S. Rep. Maxine Dexter said Thursday that she would help introduce articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, one day after an ICE officer shot and killed a Minneapolis motorist.
Dexter, an Oregon Democrat, also vowed to “use every lever available to end the terror ICE has unleashed on our communities.”
Federal officials said the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Renee Good on Wednesday, but Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that characterization was “bullshit” and called the shooting “reckless.”
“I am helping introduce articles of impeachment for Kristi Noem, who’s complicit in the murder of Renee Nicole Good yesterday,” Dexter said in a video posted to social media. “We all have seen it in cold blood. While filming, an ICE officer point-blank fired on a woman who was not using her car as a weapon. She simply was using her civil rights to be a legal observer as her neighbors were being terrorized by federal officials.”
Dexter said she would be joining U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, an Illinois Democrat, in bringing the articles of impeachment. She said everyone should demand accountability.
“We need safety and security from our federal officers,” Dexter said. “Not terror, not murder. And I call upon my colleagues to understand the moment that we are in. Our hands are tied in the minority in so many ways, but we must rise up. Americans cannot fear their government and the officials who are enforcing laws. This is not legal, this is not OK and it has to stop.”
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek also addressed the shooting on Thursday.
