Beloved ABC reporter famed for award-winning coverage of OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson trials dies after health battle
A FORMER ABC reporter who earned prestigious awards for his coverage of the OJ Simpson trial has died.
Jim Avila, 69, worked as a senior correspondent with ABC News for nearly 20 years before his death.
The heartbreaking news was shared on Thursday by ABC News Live Anchor Diane Macedo.
She said he “passed away after a long illness” and had previously gotten a kidney replacement, but didn’t give any further details about the cause.
Avila traveled across the country and worked with nearly every major news network throughout his prodigious career.
He was with ABC News for nearly two decades before rounding out his coverage at an ABC affiliate station in San Diego, California.
From 1994 to 1996, Avila covered OJ Simpson’s criminal trial with KNBC in Los Angeles, and won an Emmy Award and a Golden Mike Award for his contributions.
He went on to tackle several other nation-gripping trials like that of serial child molester Jerry Sandusky and the once accused Michael Jackson.
Avila got his start at radio stations in California before working at several CBS stations.
While he was with ABC News, he covered the White House during the Obama administration from 2012 to 2016.
