Cornyn challenges GOP colleague to find votes needed to end Democratic obstruction

Senator John Cornyn, the Texas Republican, challenged his GOP colleague on Friday to find the necessary votes to overcome persistent Democratic obstruction in the chamber.

Utah’s Mike Lee has pushed back against Republicans unwilling to pursue partisan legislation that lacks the required 60 votes to end their colleagues’ filibusters. He called his party’s attitude a “recipe for failure” on Thursday.

“Your job to get ‘em, Mike, if you can,” Cornyn replied in an X post. “Can’t just complain about others. Prove us wrong.”

The rift between Cornyn and members of the MAGA coalition has grown since his May primary defeat to a challenger backed by President Donald Trump. The Texan has aired grievances about fruitless pursuits by Lee and other instigators as Republicans grow increasingly unpopular among voters.

Cornyn pushed back last week against the idea of the GOP passing the SAVE America Act, a voter ID bill demanded by Trump, with only a simple majority, as some right-wing influencers have suggested.

“Not gonna happen, and every one (except the naive or misinformed) knows it,” the senator wrote on X.

Cornyn’s primary defeat has allowed him to voice opinions without the threat of punishment by the president or his supporters. He has less than seven months left with the Senate GOP, which Trump maintains a strong hold on.
