A Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee is being mocked online over his “idiotic” analogy shortly before the U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding birthright citizenship.

“If a woman gives birth at the Supreme Court is her baby entitled to automatic status as a justice?” tweeted Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah on Tuesday morning.

About an hour later, the court upheld a broad conception of birthright citizenship, rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order declaring that children born to people who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens, the Associated Press reported.

Lee, a constitutional law expert seen as a leader in conservative legal thought, was ripped over his tweet.

“I bet this goes hard if you’re f------ stupid,” replied Jamie Bonkiewicz on X.

“The GOP is not sending its best,” added @theblessedsalt.

Others contrasted Lee’s tweet with his reputation.

“Remember when this guy was seen as a deep legal thinker?” tweeted Mike Nelson.

Added @Legal_Fil: “This man was once considered serious.”

Robbie Sherwood, communications director for the Arizona state House Democrats, humored Lee.

“The answer, you trolling nitwit, is no, even though said hypothetical baby would be a better Supreme Court justice than Kavanaugh, Alito and Thomas. The baby would, however, be a United States citizen,” Sherwood tweeted.

After the ruling was handed down, Lee slammed the court’s interpretation of the 14th Amendment.

“In today’s world, unrestricted, automatic birthright citizenship is suicidal. The Supreme Court could and should have read the Fourteenth Amendment as something other than a suicide pact,” Lee tweeted. “Those who drafted and ratified that provision certainly didn’t regard it as such.”

He called for a constitutional amendment to ban birthright citizenship.
