South Dakota primary decides most GOP candidates for November
Although who will represent South Dakota for the Republicans for the governor's seat on Nov. 3 remains up in the air, the voters chose their candidates for the U.S. Senate seat and House of Representatives seat.
Incumbent Sen. Mike Rounds handily defeated his challenger Justin McNeal, winning every county in the state. Rounds garnered 76% of the vote. He will run against Democrat Julian Beaudion in November.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley won his bid for the single South Dakota House of Representatives seat. He brought in 79% of the vote, defeating James Bialota. Jackley, who also won each county, will run against Democrat candidate Nicole Gronli on Nov. 3.
Because no candidate garnered more than 35% of the vote in the four-way GOP governor's race, the top two winners in the June 2 primary, Toby Doeden and Gov. Larry Rhoden, will advance to a runoff on July 28.
Doeden, who hails from Aberdeen, was the winner in both Brown and Codington counties.
According to the South Dakota Secretary of State's Office, a little more than 170,000 people cast a vote in the June 2 primaries.
