Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office is refusing to answer “basic questions” about the Kentucky Republican’s health and whereabouts more than a month after he was hospitalized, according to The Daily Beast.

The outlet reported Tuesday that McConnell’s staff has declined to provide information on whether the senator has spoken to them in recent days, details about his cognitive status or when he is expected to return to work.

Reporters also observed security vehicles stationed outside George Washington University Hospital over recent days and indicated the vehicles appeared to belong to the senator.

This has been the latest update on McConnell’s condition since he broke weeks of silence July 12, revealing that a fall led to his hospitalization in June and prompted ongoing medical evaluation at a rehabilitation center.

In a statement, the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican addressed growing public concern about his health, explaining that doctors continue to investigate what caused the incident.

“Folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older,” McConnell wrote.

“Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct — I can’t help it.”

McConnell added that while recovering from the fall, he was also dealing with a mild case of pneumonia.

The senator remains at the rehabilitation facility and has not set a timeline for returning to Washington, according to the release.

He said previously that he continues conducting official business through daily contact with his staff.

McConnell’s office initially provided minimal details about his condition, saying only that he was receiving excellent care and recovering.

As his hospital stay lengthened, public pressure for transparency grew, with Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear calling for the senator to provide an update last week, stating that “Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and well-being, and ability to hold office.”

McConnell was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home before emergency services transported him to a hospital on June 14, according to multiple outlets.

A reported EMS audio dispatch from that day referenced Advanced Life Support protocols, but fact checking site Snopes reported that it was not possible to independently verify his current health status or if the audio specifically related to his emergency.

The former Senate Minority Leader’s physical condition has visibly declined in recent years, making the alleged secrecy around his health more notable to constituents and political observers.

He was hospitalized for a concussion following a fall in March 2023 and suffered injuries from another fall in 2024, shortly after which he announced he would not be seeking reelection.

He is among the oldest sitting U.S. senators.

McConnell was born in Sheffield, Alabama and raised in Athens until he was 8. His family then moved to Georgia and Kentucky.
