Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) said Thursday that he is unsure if Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is alive.

In an interview with NewsNation, Stutzman said he has not heard from McConnell, whose health has come under scrutiny as few details have been made public during his hospital stay, which has now lasted more than three weeks.

As unverified claims swirl online, it remains unclear why the longtime senator, 84, was admitted or what his current condition is.

While speaking on “Morning in America,” Stutzman argued that McConnell’s constituents deserve answers. He added that Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear had “every right” to request a public health update from the lawmaker on Wednesday as weeks of uncertainty have already passed.

“As a Republican, I think we need to hold our own party accountable,” Stutzman said. “And so the fact that we haven’t heard anything really from senator McConnell is very discouraging and concerning. And I think that for the representation of the Republican Party and to get some of the bills done that we want to get done in the Senate, it’s critical that we have a senator from Kentucky voting in the Senate chamber.”

When asked if he knows whether McConnell is alive, Stutzman replied: “I don’t.”

“You know, just the things that I’ve heard and seen from some friends is that he’s obviously not doing well, but don’t know if he’s alive or has passed away,” Stutzman said.

President Donald Trump signaled on Wednesday that he has similarly been left in the dark on McConnell’s condition.

“I have no idea,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “I have no idea how he’s doing.”

However, spokespeople for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and Senate Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), as well as CNN conservative pundit Scott Jennings, have claimed that they have called McConnell in recent days.

McConnell was hospitalized on the morning of June 14 and was “receiving excellent care,” according to a statement at the time from spokesperson David Popp.

Independent journalist Desiree Townsend shared an audio recording on X from the same day indicating that emergency responders were called to McConnell’s Washington home for an “unconscious” person.

In the audio, the dispatcher says that the call is for a “cardiac arrest,” and a paramedic could be heard saying, “CPR in progress.” McConnell’s name is not mentioned in the recording.

Since July 2, McConnell’s office has continued to point inquiries from news outlets to the same statement: “Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
