Mitch McConnell Is Hospitalized, His Spokesperson Says

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the former majority leader, was admitted to the hospital Sunday, a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson, David Popp, said in a statement that McConnell was admitted Sunday morning and was “receiving excellent care.” He did not elaborate on McConnell’s condition.

The hospitalization is the latest in a string of health issues in recent years for McConnell, 84. He was hospitalized in February for a week after experiencing flu-like symptoms. In 2023, he suffered a concussion in a serious fall and was hospitalized and then transferred to an inpatient physical rehabilitation center.

Even before those hospitalizations, McConnell, who had polio as a child, had long walked with an uneven gait. More recently, he has used a wheelchair to travel from his office building to the Capitol, though as recently as last week he was able to walk on his own.

Since stepping down as the leader of his party’s conference in the Senate in 2024, McConnell has overseen military spending as the chair of the defense subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee.

He has cautioned President Donald Trump against trying to jam more military spending into a bill passed through the legislative process of reconciliation, calling the administration’s one-off request “a missed opportunity to put key aspects of our common defense on a stronger and more enduring fiscal footing.”
