With the Senate schedule moving forward on crucial budget matters, McConnell's office emphasized that while his voting terminal will remain dark for the week, his legislative staff continues to execute his directives on both federal business and critical home-state Kentucky initiatives.

“Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week," the statement said.

The extended absence comes despite initial optimism from senior Republican leadership. Last week, Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed hope that the veteran legislator would return to Capitol Hill, noting that McConnell "sounded good" and remained deeply dialed into the moving legislative pieces. Fellow Kentucky Senator Rand Paul also told reporters that his colleague was "doing better," though he acknowledged he had not spoken with McConnell directly.

McConnell’s latest medical leave adds to a growing list of health challenges the childhood polio survivor has faced in recent years. In February, he spent over a week hospitalized for what staff described as "flu-like symptoms." His public appearances have occasionally featured visual signs of physical strain, including a heavily bandaged hand during a committee hearing in mid-May. These incidents follow a major 2023 hospitalization for a concussion and fractured rib sustained during a fall, which later resulted in two highly publicized, brief freezing episodes during congressional press conferences.
