CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A transgender activist was sentenced for threatening to assassinate U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace.

Samuel Theodore Cain was sentenced to five years, with 30 months to be served under house arrest, followed by five years of probation for threatening to assassinate Mace. The sentencing also implemented a permanent restraining order to protect Mace.

They was arrested in May 2025 after he posted publicly on X: “I’M GOING TO ASSASSINATE REPRESENTATIVE NANCY MACE WITH A GUN AND I’M BEING 100% DEAD A**.” He was denied bond three times following escalating threats that were potentially inspired by the Charlie Kirk assassination.

They was also reported to have said he would kill Mace if given the opportunity during a discussion about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

They is subject to the following conditions as part of his sentence:

Must wear a GPS monitor for the duration of his sentence

Must undergo a psychiatric evaluation with Greenville Mental Health and comply with any treatment plans, including taking all prescribed medications

Must follow a strict curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., except for verified and approved employment

Must have absolutely no contact with Congresswoman Mace, her family, or her staff

Is subject to a permanent restraining order barring any contact with Congresswoman Mace and her family

Must not possess firearms or ammunition

Cannot leave the state of South Carolina

Must complete weekly drug screenings

Must complete vocational rehabilitation

Must obtain employment or provide proof of at least three job applications each week

Must complete 100 hours of community service

May not access social media or use the internet for any purpose other than employment

If they violate any of these conditions, they would be subject to return to jail.

“The fabric of our country is being torn from within,” Mace said. “We are consumed by violent threats against the people who serve it, but nothing will stop me from fighting for South Carolina.”
