Mace’s prospects are doubtful, however, as she finished in fifth place in the gubernatorial primary, despite her name recognition and spot in the House. Mace had previously mounted a Senate primary challenge to Graham in 2014 but was likewise crushed and came in fifth place.

The congresswoman hasn’t commented on the possibility publicly but extended a lengthy tribute to Graham on social media.

“South Carolina lost a giant last night. For more than three decades Lindsey Graham gave everything he had to this state and this country, from the Air Force to the United States Senate. We did not always agree, but no one ever questioned his love for South Carolina or the fight he brought to every room he walked into,” Mace wrote. “Please join me in praying for his family and for all who called him a friend.”

Few serious challengers were willing to take on Graham in his primary this year due to his close alliance with President Donald Trump, meaning the special primary to replace him is a true toss-up. Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC) will soon appoint a replacement to serve in his seat until Jan. 3.
