Republicans from high-tax jurisdictions like Malliotakis, who represents Staten Island and a swath of southern Brooklyn, are also hoping to curry favor with high-net-worth taxpayers with the 2025 tax law’s increase on federal deductions for state and local tax payments from $10,000 to $40,000.
“We quadrupled that deduction and we limited it to incomes of $500,000 so it was truly the middle class that was benefitting,” said Malliotakis, who is a member of the tax-writing Ways and Means committee. “We didn’t want to see tax cuts for billionaires.”
Bisignano also promoted Trump accounts — the new tax-advantaged investment accounts for children born between 2025 and 2028 — as well as the state of federal tax filing season, which ends next Wednesday.
Malliotakis and Bisignano, who is also commissioner of the Social Security Administration, appeared at a Social Security office in her district. The two toured the office and met with office leaders to discuss customer service and tech upgrades to the federal retirement system.
The IRS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
