Rep. Pete Sessions to Newsmax: Let Trump Team Explain Iran Deal Before Rejecting It

Lawmakers need to give the Trump administration "an opportunity" to negotiate with Iran and then explain what the post-conflict plan is, Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday.

Appearing on Newsmax's "Wake Up America," Sessions urged fellow Republicans and the public to withhold judgment on the Trump administration's newly announced memorandum of understanding with Iran until Vice President JD Vance and other officials provide a full briefing.

"I think JD Vance should be given a chance to explain it," Sessions said. "Are we going to ask tough questions? You bet we will. Should we expect direct answers? Yes, we should. But I think that running at this with a hard no right off the bat is a bad position for us to be in as members of Congress."

The Texas Republican said many critics are reacting to social media commentary rather than to information from officials directly involved in the negotiations.

"Let's give it an opportunity," Sessions said. "Trust me, I'll be the person to ask as many tough questions as anyone, but we need to give it a chance."

Vance on Sunday defended the agreement, saying it establishes a framework for reducing tensions while preserving U.S. leverage.

The vice president described the deal as "a good foundation" that still requires significant follow-through and verification, according to multiple media reports.

Sessions acknowledged concerns raised by Republican foreign-policy hawks, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who has publicly expressed skepticism that Tehran will honor any agreement and warned that stronger measures may be required if diplomacy fails.

While noting that Graham is a longtime ally and that he, too, is often viewed as a national-security hawk, Sessions said Congress must first understand the administration's broader strategy.

"We have to have a plan," Sessions said. "And that plan is something that Republican members of the House and myself will be asking for."

The congressman pointed to ongoing military and security considerations in the region, including U.S. force posture and evolving drone-warfare capabilities, as factors lawmakers will need to evaluate before reaching conclusions.

"This president is a pretty complex guy," Sessions said. "I think the military is up to the work. But let's know what the plan is."

"Once we know what the plan is," he added, "then we'll be able to nod our head or shake our head one way or another."
