Mace Wants Natural-Born Requirement for Congress

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., wants to see a constitutional amendment that would ban people not born in the United States from serving in Congress or on the federal judiciary.

"Ilhan Omar, Shri Thanedar, Pramila Jayapal — all born in foreign countries, none were citizens by birth," Mace said on social media.

"All sitting in the United States Congress. All making clear every single day their loyalty is not to America," she said.

Mace, who is running for governor of South Carolina, recently introduced a joint resolution proposing the amendment, which would also apply to Senate-confirmed positions.

"This is the very same standard the President and Vice President are already required to meet," Mace said.

"The people writing America's laws, confirming America's judges, and representing America on the world stage should have one loyalty: America, not any other country," she said.

"For too long we have allowed foreign-born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America Last, not America First," Mace added.

"We see it every day. This constitutional amendment will put an end to it," she said.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal ripped Mace, calling her proposal "racist legislation that denies the very history of a country that has been proudly shaped by immigrants."

"This is also insulting to the hundreds of thousands of constituents who elected naturalized citizens into office," Jayapal said.

"With the exception of Native Americans, every person in this country — including Nancy Mace — is descended from immigrants.

"And America is made stronger by the people from across the world with diverse talents who come here to live and work," Jayapal added.

Jayapal called her naturalization ceremony "one of the most meaningful days of my life."

"This narrow-minded, xenophobic legislation has no place in Congress, and I call on all my colleagues — including my Republican colleagues who are naturalized citizens — to condemn this," Jayapal said.

Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., said Mace should be focusing on skyrocketing gas prices, making healthcare more affordable, and bringing down housing costs.

"Instead of working to solve people’s problems, Rep. Mace is making racist and xenophobic attacks against me and my colleagues," Thanendar said in a statement.

"Her comments are reprehensible, but it’s clear this what we can expect from MAGA: the party of protecting pedophiles, starting wars, and raising costs," the statement read.
