‘Taxpayer Dollars Funded Wuhan Research’: Rand Paul Alleges Fauci Misled Americans
During a Senate hearing, senior CIA officer James Erdman III testified that some intelligence assessments had leaned towards a laboratory origin before conclusions were reportedly altered internally.

The long-running political and intelligence battle over the origins of COVID-19 intensified sharply in Washington this week after Senator Rand Paul claimed a CIA whistleblower had confirmed allegations that US officials suppressed evidence supporting the Wuhan lab leak theory.
Speaking after a Senate hearing on Tuesday, the Kentucky Republican alleged that intelligence officials, including figures linked to Dr Anthony Fauci, deliberately concealed findings that pointed towards a possible laboratory origin for the pandemic.
“Today, a CIA whistleblower sat before my committee and confirmed what I've said for years,” Paul wrote on X. “This is not a conspiracy theory. This is sworn testimony.”
The hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee featured testimony from James Erdman III, a senior CIA operations officer who led an internal investigation into how intelligence agencies handled COVID-origin assessments.
According to Erdman, documents reviewed during his investigation indicated that by August 2021, the CIA had been preparing to formally describe the Wuhan Institute of Virology as the likely source of the outbreak before internal revisions altered the conclusion. Erdman testified that the agency later shifted towards what he described as a “non-call judgment” after senior-level intervention.
Wuhan Lab Debate Reignites Inside Washington
The Wuhan Institute of Virology has remained at the centre of international controversy since the early stages of the pandemic because it conducted coronavirus research involving bat samples and gain-of-function experimentation.
The institute had received US-linked funding through grants connected to the National Institutes of Health and EcoHealth Alliance. Rand Paul has repeatedly accused Fauci — who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during the pandemic — of misleading Congress about the nature of that funding and the extent of American involvement in coronavirus research linked to Wuhan.
“Taxpayer dollars funded risky gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Paul said in his latest statement. “Fauci denied it under oath. The evidence says otherwise.” The senator further alleged that intelligence officials suppressed dissenting views within the CIA and buried a January 2020 internal briefing that reportedly raised concerns about a possible lab origin.
Erdman’s testimony added another layer to that dispute. According to The Epoch Times, the CIA officer told senators that six out of seven analysts involved in one assessment reportedly leaned towards the lab-leak theory before the conclusions were later revised. The exact findings of Erdman’s investigative team, however, have not been publicly released.
CIA Pushes Back Against Senate Hearing Claims
The CIA responded aggressively after details from the hearing emerged. Agency spokesperson Liz Lyons criticised the proceedings in a statement posted on X, describing the hearing as “dishonest political theater masquerading as a congressional hearing”.
At the same time, the CIA also reiterated its current public position that a laboratory leak remains the “more likely” explanation for the origin of COVID-19 — though the agency maintains only “low confidence” in that assessment.
That contradiction reflects the broader uncertainty that has surrounded the issue since the pandemic began. In 2021, a declassified US intelligence review concluded that American agencies remained divided between two competing explanations:
A natural spillover event
A laboratory-related incident in Wuhan
An updated assessment released in 2023 similarly stated that both theories relied on incomplete or conflicting evidence. Still, political pressure around the issue has only intensified.
Paul has now subpoenaed 14 federal agencies for documents linked to COVID origins and gain-of-function research. He also renewed calls for criminal prosecution against Fauci, accusing him of deleting records and obstructing congressional oversight.
The senator additionally questioned the legality of former President Joe Biden’s reported pardon protections for Fauci, arguing they could face legal scrutiny if prosecutors moved forward with charges.
