Donna Miller projected to win 2nd District Congressional primary
The race to replace Rep. Robin Kelly in Illinois’ 2nd District drew plenty of attention, and NBC News is projecting Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller as the winner.
Miller outdueled nine other challengers in the Democratic primary, including former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and State Sen. Robert Peters.
Miller served on the board of Planned Parenthood for years, including a stint as its chair beginning in 2015.
She was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners in 2018 and won reelection in 2022, representing the sixth district on the board.
Miller ran on a platform that included “Medicare for All,” seeking to ensure every American has health insurance through the public sector. She also pledged to continue her work in protecting reproductive rights, and she also has argued for rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement to combat climate change and to hold the Trump administration in check in their immigration enforcement efforts.
Miller faced criticism from Peters for her fundraising, which raked in nearly $900,000 in donations from out-of-state donors for her campaign according to FEC filings, the Hyde Park Herald reported.
PAC’s also blanketed airwaves with advertisements for Miller’s campaign in the lead-up to the election, allowing her to overcome a name recognition battle with Jackson.
The general election will be held on November 3.
