Ron Johnson to head Senate Budget Committee after Lindsey Graham death
MADISON - Senior Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson was named chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Budget by the Republican Conference Tuesday following the death of longtime South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Johnson, who is currently in the middle of his third six-year term, said that with this promotion, he plans to support President Donald Trump's agenda and uncover fraud within government agencies.
“As chairman for the remainder of the year, I intend to maximize this opportunity to define the fiscal challenge we face, help expose the fraud in government programs, and work with the House, the White House, and my Senate colleagues to enact as much of President Trump’s agenda as possible,” he said in a July 22 news release.
The role of chairman on the chamber's budget committee consists of leading the drafting of Congresses' annual budget and overseeing federal spending, revenue and the committee's agenda.
Graham held the position for just under two years before he died on July 11.
“I’m stepping into this role following the tragic death of my friend and colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham. He was a true American patriot, and he will be sorely missed," Johnson said.
