Repealing the 17th Amendment isn’t about principle-it’s about power | PennLive letters

So U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and others are trying to get rid of the 17th Amendment so that state legislators can pick their own people to send to the U.S. Senate. They want to stop allowing voters to choose who will represent them in the U.S. Senate.

These senators are saying that they’re restoring the situation conceived by the Founding Fathers — who believed their successors would be honest and honorable. They say it would cut down on spending by special interest groups.

Of course — they wouldn’t have to spend money trying to convince voters, because voters would no longer have a say in the matter. These senators say it’s just to rebalance the power between states’ rights and an overreaching federal government - except for their Lord and Master, Donald Trump. With redistricting and gerrymandering, Republicans will do as much as they can to make sure most state legislatures are Republican.

I hope I live long enough to see the Democrats, or some other party, use these same methods to make the federal and state governments majority Democratic, or controlled by some other party, and hear the Republicans scream, “You can’t do that!”
