Trump's Cabinet Asked To Invoke 25th Amendment Against President
A Democratic Representative has asked President Donald Trump's cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment against him amid the Iran war.
In a letter to each cabinet member, Shri Thanedar called Trump "a threat to our country and to the world," adding that "he must be removed from office immediately."
The 25th Amendment allows a cabinet to remove the president from office and replace him with the vice president under certain conditions.
Newsweek contacted the White House for comment by email outside of normal business hours.
What To Know
Trump has faced growing backlash to the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, which began in February under the military operation dubbed "Epic Fury."
The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has said more than 3,500 people have been killed in Iran since the attacks began, including at least 1,665 civilians.
On Tuesday, Trump wrote on social media that a "whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz before 8 p.m. ET.
A two-week ceasefire deal was later agreed between the U.S. and Iran subject to Tehran lifting an effective blockade on international shipping moving through the critical waterway.
