Envelope containing ‘suspicious substance’ prompts evacuation of Va. congressman’s office
The district office of Northern Virginia congressman Suhas Subramanyam was evacuated Monday morning after it received an envelope containing a “suspicious substance,” Subramanyam said on social media.
Officers and other first responders were at Subramanyam’s office on Wirt Street SW in Leesburg, at around 9:30 a.m. for an investigation, according to a social media post from police.
Subramanyam thanked Leesburg police, Loudoun County fire and its hazmat team, and the U.S. Capitol Police for their swift response.
“These acts of political intimidation have no place in our country,” Subramanyam said in a statement.
I can confirm that my office in Leesburg received an envelope containing a suspicious substance. The office was promptly evacuated. Thank you to the Leesburg Police, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue and their Hazmat team, and the Capitol Police for your swift response. These acts of political intimidation have no place in our country.

Federal authorities are investigating letters with “suspicious substances” that have been mailed to congressional and election offices nationwide. The FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Capitol Police are urging recipients to treat the mailings as “potentially hazardous.”
On Thursday, The Associated Press obtained a notice sent to Senate offices by the body’s Sergeant at Arms. It stated that law enforcement officials were working to intercept any additional letters, but “it is possible that some letters may reach their destinations.”
It’s unclear if the envelope at Subramanyam’s office is connected.
The congressman, a Democrat, represents Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, which includes all of Loudoun, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties and parts of Prince William and Fairfax counties, along with the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. Subramanyam is running for reelection in November against Republican nominee Dave Beckwith.
