Virginians unaccounted for in Nepal after flash flooding

At least 389 people are dead, and hundreds are missing in Nepal after a terrible flash flood wrought a wave of destruction through the northern Rasuwa district near the border of Tibet.

The State Department said about 90 Americans were among those affected by the flood, but no American deaths have been reported yet.

Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) said some of those unaccounted for in Nepal are from Northern Virginia.

"The news of the flash floods at the Nepal-Tibet border is devastating. My prayers are with everyone who has been impacted by this terrible disaster," Subramanyan said in a statement. "I am especially concerned that so many U.S. citizens have been impacted and are currently missing, including many of my constituents from Northern Virginia. Some of them were community leaders who went to find spiritual connection in the Himalayas."

Subramanyan said his team has been in touch with the State Department, working to ensure search and rescue operations are underway to find the missing people.
