Mainers will confront established Trump loyalist Sen. Susan Collins at the polls. She needs replacing, and Graham Platner is the answer.

In 1933, wealthy businessmen hatched a plan, based on Italy’s and Germany’s fascist governments, to overthrow President Franklin Roosevelt. Retired Marine Lt. Gen. Smedley D. Butler was offered millions of dollars to organize veterans and accomplish the takeover. Detecting fascism, Butler protected America’s democracy, reported the attempt and prevented the planned coup.

President Trump, 93 years later, after stating he would “terminate” the U.S. Constitution, has activated his also fascist-inspired plan to destroy America’s democracy. His con artistry got him to the Oval Office, where he and his entourage of loyalists, paid for by taxpayers, are implementing their takeover plan. Their purpose is to achieve democracy’s demise and gain total governmental dominance. Trump’s supporters, like Sen. Collins, support his endeavors, ignoring their sworn oaths of office to defend the Constitution. New Senate leadership is essential.

Mainers are fortunate that Graham Platner has stepped up to the plate to take on Collins, who has failed Mainers. Platner served his country, explained his past and is committed to serving Maine as a true public servant. Untainted by corporate wealth and power, he is a voice of the people’s working class. Importantly, this Marine veteran reflects Gen. Butler’s patriotism as a protector of democracy, the key issue in American politics. Only leaders like Platner can save its destruction from the likes of Trump-Collins’ collaborations.
