Some demonstrators assembled in front of US Senator Susan Collin’s Biddeford office, a city of about 22,000 people located about 20 miles south of Portland. The protesters were seen banging on the office’s glass doors and chanting “Vote her out!” Eventually, several police officers arrived to the scene.

Other protesters gathered on the streets of Biddeford near where the shooting occurred Monday morning.

Collins released a statement on social media saying that the shooting “requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened. It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site and that the FBI is investigating.”

Collins is up for reelection in November, and the race is scene as one of the key contests to determine control of the Senate. Maine Democrats are in the process of selecting Collins’ challenger after nominee Graham Platner withdrew from the race last week following a sexual assault allegation.

A few of the Democrats who have shown interest taking Platner’s spot spoke out Monday. Nirav Shah, former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, criticized ICE while speaking with a woman at the protest in Biddeford.

“How many more people have to be killed at the hands of federal immigration officials for something like a routine traffic stop before we say that it’s time to dismantle if not abolish the system outright?”

Jordan Wood, a former Capitol Hill staffer who is also running for US Senate in Maine, told reporters in Lewiston that the shooting represents “another incident of violence in our state.”

”What we’ve known in Maine for the past year is that ICE under the Trump administration is terrorizing our streets, and we need a senator right now with the courage to stand up to this administration and demand accountability of this agency," Wood said.
