Susan Collins

I support Sen. Susan Collins because I subscribe to the adage: “Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.”

She’s demonstrated a consistency of character that is rare in Washington, D.C. Her opponent’s past behavior, on the other hand, suggests he cannot fill Sen. Collins’ shoes in Congress and would be a bad representative for Mainers.

Sen. Collins recently cast her 10,000th vote in the Senate without missing one, making her the most consistent and hard-working member of Congress. And what does she do for Maine with those votes? As chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, she focuses on common-sense, nonpartisan issues like jobs and safety, and brings back resources to Maine like no other could.

Republicans, Democrats and independents alike can agree that we’d rather have our representatives delivering tangible, quality-of-life improvements rather than stirring up culture-war fights on social media. No other senator can claim what Sen. Collins can: every town in her state has benefited from her local-issues-first legislating style.

Even though she focuses on Maine issues, Sen. Collins’ 10,000 votes mark demonstrates that when necessary, she isn’t afraid to voice her opinion on controversial topics. We may not always agree with her, but we should appreciate that Collins has the courage to make tough votes and the sense to spend her time thinking about us Mainers, rather than the national political circus.
