Susan Collins could and should be doing more right now | Letter

I believe Sen. Susan Collins expects us to be grateful that, by voting for the War Powers Resolution ending conflict in Iran, she was one of the few Republicans to support the latest effort to require Congress to do its job.

We need Collins to do more. We need her to use her seniority and position to make sure going to war (or in this case, continuing to be at war) is a serious decision made by all of the people’s elected representatives.

How? She could become a co-sponsor of a new War Powers Resolution. As chair of the Appropriations Committee, she could schedule public hearings on how billions of dollars already appropriated to the Department of Defense have been spent and — more importantly — how those expenditures have made America safer.

What she can’t do is fool us with votes that are meaningless because the ultimate outcome has been predetermined.
