Cruz’s comment refers to the creation of a $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran as outlined in the MOU. President Trump said that the U.S. will not provide any capital to the fund. However, details around potential indirect support or third-party contributions remain unclear.
Republicans Criticize Iran Deal as Nuclear Talks Stall
Meanwhile, Senator Bill Cassidy labeled the deal as the “the worst foreign policy blunder in decades.” He added that the agreement will strengthen Iran and weaken U.S. allies.
Senator John Cornyn warned that the MOU doesn’t stop Iran from leveraging the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a political weapon again. “Everything I’ve heard about it causes me concern,” he said.
On Thursday, both the U.S. and Iran announced that they would postpone nuclear talks in Switzerland, highlighting the difficulty in making progress toward a broader deal.
