Senator Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican, is echoing President Donald Trump’s call for a U.S. response to an Iranian attack on an Army helicopter.

The chopper, carrying two soldiers near the Strait of Hormuz, went down off the coast of Oman during a Monday night patrol, according to U.S. Central Command. Trump attributed the incident to an Iranian strike and called for American retaliation early Tuesday afternoon.

“President Trump is absolutely right,” Cruz wrote in an X post. “There is a pressing necessity for the U.S. to respond to this attack.”

Tehran hasn’t denied responsibility for the attack, which, along with other Iranian and American strikes, has threatened a two-months-long ceasefire. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a statement later Tuesday that foreign forces near Iran are at “constant risk” of “plain accidents,” getting stuck in crossfire and of their own human errors.

“To reduce risk, the best solution is for foreign forces to exit, as soon as possible, an environment which will never be hospitable to a hostile presence,” Araghchi said.

Iran and the U.S. have exchanged strikes several times since early April, when they agreed to an official pause in fighting that has killed soldiers on both sides, destabilized a region and disrupted the global economy.
