Tom Tiffany campaigns in Altoona, calls for tax cuts and school accountability

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) - Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany made a campaign stop in the Chippewa Valley Saturday morning as part of a statewide tour of 29 “Save Wisconsin Saturday” stops, joining the Young Republican National Federation at the Eau Claire County Republican Party headquarters in Altoona.

Tiffany said he wants to return the state’s budget surplus to taxpayers. He criticized Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Crowley, saying Crowley wants to leave the surplus in Madison for politicians to spend.

Tiffany said he supports ending the state’s property tax increase and freezing property taxes. He said he supports cutting income taxes for middle-income taxpayers and eliminating state taxes on tips and overtime.

“We’re going to do no taxes on tips and overtime, just like we did federally,” Tiffany said.

Tiffany said he would audit state government agencies in Wisconsin if elected.

“We’re going to audit all of the state government,” Tiffany said. “Every agency is going to get audited here in Wisconsin.”

Tiffany said the Department of Public Instruction has accepted declining standards, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he would push for higher academic standards and more accountability for school funding if elected.

“We are going to get Wisconsin’s educational system back on track,” Tiffany said. “Higher standards. Honest report cards to parents. We’re going to get that money in the classroom, not into the bureaucracy. We should pay good teachers more money.”

Tiffany said teachers should be paid more and said administrators should be held accountable for safety in the classroom.

Tiffany also said he supports limiting girls’ school sports to female athletes, a policy position that has drawn debate across the country.

“Girls and only girls are going to play girls sports,” Tiffany said.

Tiffany said his campaign has more than 300 door knockers who have reached over 820,000 targeted doors in Wisconsin, with a goal of reaching a million doors.

Tiffany described the governor’s race as close and said Western Wisconsin is key to the outcome.

“This election is a game of inches,” Tiffany said. “This race is basically a dead heat at this point. And it’s who turns out that’s going to win this election.”

WEAU has reached out to Crowley’s campaign for a response to todays event.
