Rep. Burchett to Newsmax: Bill Would Expose $1 Trillion in Federal Waste

Legislation advancing through the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee would help expose duplicative federal spending and hold Congress accountable for wasteful taxpayer expenditures, Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., said Sunday on Newsmax.

Speaking on Newsmax's "Wake Up America Weekend," Burchett said the bill was inspired by fiscal policies in Tennessee and backed by President Donald Trump.

"The president challenged us to do this," Burchett said. "And the reason he did all his executive orders primarily is because Congress doesn't have the guts to follow through with it. But I do, and several members do."

Burchett said the legislation would require Congress to disclose when proposed programs or departments duplicate existing federal efforts and spell out the financial impact directly in the text of legislation.

"All this bill does is it reports duplicative issues," Burchett said. "If we vote on developing a new department, within that, it will state that it is a complete duplication."

He said the measure would make lawmakers more accountable to voters by preventing members of Congress from claiming they were unaware of the cost or overlap of legislation.

"It holds Congress's feet to the fire," Burchett said. "It also allows the American public to say, 'Hey, why did you vote on this?' And the Congress can't say, 'Well, I didn't know. It's not in the bill.' Well, dadgum, it is in the bill because it says it right in the text."

Burchett pointed to Tennessee's financial standing as a model for the federal government.

"Tennessee has zero debt, if you can imagine that as a state," he said. "Washington, D.C., does not."

The congressman said lawmakers have already identified more than $1 trillion in duplicative federal spending.

"We've found over $1 trillion in duplication, if you can imagine that in Congress, in our federal government," Burchett said. "And it just rips you all off every year."

Burchett added that the spending ultimately burdens future generations.

"That's stealing from my daughter and my grandkids," he said.

During the interview, Burchett also discussed President Donald Trump's influence in recent Republican primaries, saying the president's political strength comes from his agenda rather than personal power alone.

"He had one direction, and that was to make America great again," Burchett said. "And it's a pro-America approach."

Burchett also addressed the latest Pentagon release of documents related to unidentified aerial phenomena, saying the public still is not getting the full picture.

"The president kept his word to me. He's going through it. But the problem we've got is we're not getting everything," Burchett said.

Burchett claimed some of the released material appeared designed to discredit the issue by including easily explainable footage but said other videos deserved closer scrutiny.

"There's a submarine, and I won't say whose submarine it is, but there's something flying around it very suspiciously and flying within close proximity," Burchett said. "Something was flying around at an incredible rate of speed."

The congressman said additional records remain hidden from both Congress and the public.

"America needs more. There's more than this out there," Burchett said. "They haven't released everything, at least that I've seen."

Burchett also claimed some officials have withheld information from Trump himself.

"I sat in these meetings, and some kid with a man bun told me that the president was on a need-to-know basis," Burchett said. "That would be a chilling effect on America, that we have an area of our government that keeps secrets from our own president of the United States."

He said the issue ultimately concerns government transparency and taxpayer accountability.

"It's not about little green men. It's not about flying saucers," Burchett said. "It's what are we spending tens of millions of your tax dollars on that they claim don't exist?"
