Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor in Alabama, says he can put claims that he actually lives in Florida to rest.
Tuberville’s campaign said Monday that the Republican nominee will put the issue “to bed” by releasing tax returns, property records and other documentation they say prove he has lived in Alabama since 2019.
Campaign manager Jordan Doufexis said Tuberville will submit a “comprehensive response” of documentation that shows he “is a resident citizen of Alabama and has been for well beyond the period required under the Alabama Constitution,” in a statement provided to AL.com.
The Alabama GOP will hold a hearing about Tuberville’s residency later this month, following a new challenge from primary candidate Ken McFeeters.
Tuberville has faced years of questions about whether he has actually lived in Alabama long enough to meet the state’s seven-year requirement to run for governor.
Property tax records show that Tuberville owns a $270,000 home in Auburn, where he claims a homestead exemption, and a $4 million beach home in Walton County, Florida.
He got the homestead exemption in 2018. But he also voted in Florida in 2018, according to AL.com reporting.
“I have been a resident. It’s not an issue,” Tuberville told reporters when he filed to run for office.
Asked in January where he spent most of his time outside of Washington, Tuberville said Auburn, adding that he’s not home very often but “went to almost every football game down there this year.”
On Monday, his campaign said he had an active driver’s license in Alabama starting in 2000 and got a new one in 2019.
The state Republican has already dismissed an earlier challenge by McFeeters.
