Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., told Newsmax on Tuesday that the case of Arcadia, California, Mayor Eileen Wang, who has been charged with acting as an agent of China, underscores why America needs his Assimilation Act now more than ever.

Appearing on "Ed Henry: The Big Take," Tuberville said the issue goes beyond communist China and points to a broader failure of the U.S. immigration system to ensure newcomers embrace American laws, culture and values.

"Not just communist China, but people from Third World countries that are coming here," he said. "And it's all about assimilation."

Tuberville said immigrants from past generations came to America determined to build up the country, not change it into the nations they left behind.

"It's all about coming here, like our German ancestors and Italians and the Greeks and all coming over years ago and saying, 'Listen ... this is our country now. Let's make it better,'" he said.

"Let's not fly our flags around; let's go by the laws of the United States of America and make it better," Tuberville added.

Wang's case has renewed concerns among Republicans about China's influence operations in the United States, particularly when alleged foreign agents gain positions of public trust.

The senator said the problem is made worse by an immigration system in desperate need of reform.

"But the problem is our immigration system is broken," he said. "It needs to be fixed. I've got a bill out now called the Assimilation Act, and it prioritizes people that want to come over and assimilate."

Tuberville said his bill would also end certain immigration programs that no longer serve America's interests.

"It also does away with chain migration, does away with the visa lottery," he said. "A lot of this stuff we have is nonsense."

The Alabama Republican said the United States may need to take dramatic action to regain control of immigration.

"Go back to 1920 – we didn't have any immigration," Tuberville said. "We stopped it and if we have to do that to correct this problem we've got, which is huge, we need to do that."

He warned that America is being systematically eroded by people who come here but reject the American way of life.

"We are losing our country every day because of the nonsense of these people coming from other countries and saying, 'Hey, we want to change this country to the country we came from,'" Tuberville said. "Well, heck, if you're doing that, why don't you just stay at home?"

"We don't need you here," he continued. "You're not ruining our country, folks. If you don't want to go by our laws and our Constitution, go back where you came from."
