Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville said Congress was “embarrassing” and called out members of his own party for its lack of progress on legislation.

Tuberville, who is running for governor in Alabama, appeared on conservative podcaster Benny Johnson’s show on Wednesday.

He said too many congressmembers are worried about getting reelected and keeping control of their chambers.

“Hell, we ain’t done anything in the majority. Why should we keep the majority? We’ve got one bill passed and that was President Trump pushing and pushing and pushing,” he said.

“It’s embarrassing that we’re up here raising money to continue the same people being up here. It’s nonsense.”

Tuberville said he thought Congress needed to do more while President Donald Trump was still in office.

“We’re handcuffing him, and we’re worried about tradition,” Tuberville said, referencing fears that the Senate would end the filibuster.

About one-third of U.S. Senate seats and all House seats are up for election in 2026. Tuberville, a college football coach turned politician, opted against seeking a second term in favor of running to replace Gov. Kay Ivey.

Republicans currently hold majorities in each branch of the federal government and many statehouses, including Alabama.

According to GovTrack, the 119th Congress so far has passed much less legislation than usual (though it has passed more than one bill).

Key legislation of Trump’s second term includes the One Big Beautiful Bill and the Laken Riley Act. Trump has passed much of his regulatory agenda through executive orders.
