Progressive Anti-AIPAC Group Loses First Election Test
A progressive candidate backed by a group against pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has conceeded defeat in Tuesday's close Democratic primary in North Carolina's 4th district.
Nida Allam admitted defeat on Wednesday night after a close result against incumbent Representative Valerie Foushee. Foushee led Allam by just 1,202 votes, with 49.2 percent against Allam's 48.2 percent, with 99 percent of the votes countes, ccording to the Associated Press, which had yet to call the race at time of publication.
Allam, a Durham County Commissioner, had attacked Foushee for previously taking money from groups tied to the powerful pro-Israel lobbying organization AIPAC. Foushee has since broken with Israel and has criticized its war with Gaza.
The anti-AIPAC super PAC American Priorities had spent more than $500,000 supporting Allam, documents filed with the Federal Election Commission showed.
She was also backed by Bernie Sanders and other progressive groups, including Justice Democrats, Leaders We Deserve, the Working Families Party, and the Sunrise Movement.
“It should not take being challenged in a primary to take bold stances that voters overwhelmingly support, but I am proud that our movement pushed our incumbent to better reflect our deeply held values and convictions,” Allam said on Wednesday night, the New York Times reported.
