Carl on path to return to Congress after winning 1st District GOP nomination
Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl handily won the Republican nomination on Tuesday for Alabama’s newly redrawn 1st Congressional District, defeating three opponents.
Carl, who President Donald Trump endorsed, secured about 75% of the special primary vote, according to unofficial election results. Air Force veteran Austin Sidwell and former Navy pilot John Mills came in second and third places, respectively. Lucas Burger ended in last place.
“I look forward to taking the fight to the socialist Democrats this November and serving alongside a fantastic delegation that puts America First,” Carl said on social media. “We are just getting started, and together, I believe the best is yet to come.”
The newly redrawn 1st District encompasses Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia and most of Covington County. It is solidly Republican, according to the Cook Political Report.
