Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl, R-Mobile, won the Republican nomination for Alabama’s 1st Congressional District Tuesday night, defeating two other candidates in a winner-take-all special primary election.

As of 8:48 p.m., Carl, boosted by an endorsement from President Donald Trump, had 21,221 votes, about 74.6% of the total, with 40% of ballots counted in unofficial returns. Austin Sidwell, who works at a private security firm, had 5,067 votes, about 17.8% of the total. John Mills, a Navy veteran, had 1,631 votes, about 5.7% of the total.

Carl will face Democratic nominee Clyde Jones, Jr. in the general election. Jones was the only Democratic candidate to qualify in the race.
