Here’s what we learned from primary day in Arizona.
Arizona’s 1st District. Amish Shah is in pole position to beat Marlene Galán-Woods in the heated Democratic primary, a result which would hand an embarrassing loss to the DCCC and its preferred candidate.
With 76% of the vote in, Shah was ahead of Galán-Woods 41.6% to 32.6%. The AP still hasn’t called the race.
Shah, the 2024 nominee, was the frontrunner for the nomination when the DCCC got behind Galán-Woods in the spring.
This irked some Democrats who have decried the committee’s decision to wade into crowded primaries. And in this contest, many Democrats felt there wasn’t enough of an ideological difference to warrant such an intervention.
The winner will take on the GOP candidate, former NFL kicker Jay Feely, in this battleground seat that’s crucial to the midterms. In 2024, Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) beat Shah by four points. Two years later, it’s an open race given Schweikert’s bid for statewide office.
