Gonzalez, Obeso-Martinez set for November showdown in California’s 36th Assembly District
INDIO — Republican incumbent Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez and Democratic challenger Dr. Ida Obeso-Martinez have both advanced to the November general election following the June 2, 2026, primary, setting up a high-stakes battle for California’s 36th Assembly District.
The sprawling district, which stretches across Imperial County and encompasses communities from Indio to Blythe and Needles to Anza, will feature a classic partisan matchup between a freshman Republican independent-style lawmaker and a determined Democratic challenger aiming to flip the seat.
Gonzalez, a 21-year Marine Corps combat veteran and currently the only veteran serving in the California State Assembly, expressed his gratitude to voters following the primary results.
