Former Mayor Luke Bronin defeats longtime Rep. John Larson in First District primary
HARTFORD, Conn (WFSB) - Former Hartford mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term incumbent Rep. John Larson in Connecticut’s First Congressional District Democratic primary on Tuesday.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Bronin received 54 percent of the vote compared to Larson’s 33 percent.
Bronin’s victory ended Larson’s nearly three-decade run on the Democratic ticket.
Larson conceded Tuesday night once the result became clear.
Bronin, the endorsed candidate of Connecticut Democrats, campaigned on a message that the party needed a newer face in Congress. He was the first candidate to unseat a Democratic incumbent in the district.
Bronin celebrated the victory surrounded by family and friends, but said his work is not finished.
“We are at a moment when our country is in crisis,” Bronin said. “We have a president who’s out of control and we need to build a Democratic Party that’s bringing a whole new energy to this fight that is clearer and bolder about what we’re fighting for.”
