Race to succeed Congressman Webster could be headed to recount

The GOP contest to succeed longtime Congressman Daniel Webster could be headed to a recount.

A few hundred votes separate the two top Republicans in District 11, which includes the bulk of The Villages.

Former Lake County PropertyAppraiser Carey Baker had the endorsement of Webster, who announced earlier this year he would be retiring and not seeking another term. Webster’s announcement set off a stampede of candidates.

Joe Strada, who owns an air conditioning/plumbing company in Sanford, poured $5 million of his own money into the campaign.

Strada held a slight lead over Baker with nearly all of the votes counted in Tuesday’s primary. A machine recount occurs when the margin is less than or equal to 0.5% total votes for office.

Congressman Randy Fine outdistanced his GOP rivals to cruise to victory in District 6. Fine, who was elected last year in a special election, once again enjoyed the endorsement of President Trump.
