Special election to fill late Georgia congressman’s seat advances to an August runoff • Georgia Recorder

Marcye Scott, the daughter of the late Congressman David Scott, fell short of winning a special election to finish her father’s term in office and will face former Gwinnett County School Board chair Everton Blair in a runoff next month.

The Associated Press made the call at around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. As of late Tuesday night, Scott led with 46% of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office. Blair came in second with about 37% of the vote.

The two Democrats will face off on Aug. 25 and that winner will serve a few months before the next term begins in January. State Rep. Jasmine Clark, who did not run in the special election, won the May primary and is expected to easily beat her Republican opponent in the safe Democratic seat in November and represent the district for …
